Intermodal and multimodal transportation combine the most efficient transport modes which optimises lead times, reduces inventory costs and keeps the level of freight costs under control.

In multimodal transportation, one contract is related to the entire transport. One carrier is fully responsible providing door-to-door delivery, even if other carriers are used in the transport. This method provides a one stop shop service, so every single aspect is handled by one logistics provider.

In intermodal transportation, there is a separate contract for each individual mode of the transportation where each mode is operated by a different carrier with independent contracts. It provides option to reach favourable rates negotiating with different carriers, but it requiers higher level of handling coordination capacity.
